Froyoworld joins P.R.’s frozen yogurt market

The new Froyoworld shop in Miramar.

San Francisco-based frozen yogurt chain Froyoworld is making its debut in the Puerto Rico market with its first store that opened in Miramar this week, franchisee Ricky Lozada announced Tuesday.

To bring the concept to the island, Lozada invested some $300,000 to open the 1,600 square-foot shop that sits 40 people and offers a variety of frozen yogurt treats that couple a variety of flavors and toppings.

“We evaluated different options to bring to Puerto Rico and chose Froyoworld for the excellent quality and freshness of the product, and for the huge variety of flavors that the brand offers,” Lozada said, noting that plans call for opening two more stores in coming months in the Condado and Río Piedras sectors of San Juan.

The Miramar store will initially employ 10 people, the entrepreneur noted.

The store offers six flavors of yogurt options concurrently but will rotate the flavors frequently, so that in each visit the customer will be able to try something different, he said. Among the most popular varieties that are available are Dutch chocolate, vanilla bean, cake batter, original tart, sweet coconut and mango sorbet. All of the flavors can be combined with toppings ranging from fresh fruit to pieces of brownie and cheesecake, and the chain’s famous “Mochi,” or bits of japanese rice cake, which are unique to Puerto Rico. The topping mix also includes flavors to please local tastes, such as guava skins, papaya and shredded coconut in syrup.

Froyoworld’s frozen yogurt has probiotic properties, which strengthen the immune and digestive systems. In addition, it is low in fat and calories, which is a healthy alternative to traditional ice cream. The brand also has varieties of sugar-free yogurt and dairy products for consumers who prefer those options.

“Froyoworld’s goal is to offer the consumer a nice place to enjoy a tasty frozen yogurt and also be a meeting point for the community,” said Lozada. “We want neighbors to identify with our stores and make it part of their way to share and enjoy something sweet and healthy.”

Froyoworld joins a lineup of several other frozen yogurt shops that are also expanding their operations, including Yogen Früz and Menchie’s which is slated to open in Guaynabo later this year.
