British liquor producer Diageo has kicked off the recruitment of college students interested in participating in its “Learning for Life” program, an eight-week hands-on training on Puerto Rico’s service and tourism industry. The company will grant more than $55,000 in scholarships to youth 18 and over interested in getting certified.

The next course starts April 17 at the University of Puerto Rico’s School of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Carolina and at the Universidad del Este’s International Tourism and Hotel Administration School in Carolina and Santa Isabel.

Diageo has designed this program in Latin America and the Caribbean to support those who want to further their skills in specific hospitality areas. In Puerto Rico, Diageo offers a beverage service course that gives program participants the tools to insert themselves into the island’s tourism workforce.

Among other things, the course teaches  basic principles of running a bar, the tools required to succeed, the responsibilities of a bartender, customer service, drink-making and the origin of a variety of liquors.

The 190-hour “Learning for Life” course is split between 100 theoretical, 45 practical and 45 conversational English hours. For more information, students can apply at their schools or electronically, at www.hotelera-UPR.net or www.suagm.edu/une. Application deadline is March 23, 2012.
