Guinness-worthy giant cup of coffee featured at upcoming P.R. Coffee Expo

Puerto Rico’s coffee industry is marking its 275th anniversary this year, a milestone to be celebrated during the second edition of the “Puerto Rico Coffee Expo,” slated for Oct. 8-9, at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, the event’s trio of organizers said during a news conference Tuesday.

As part of this celebration, the www.puertoricoiscoffee.com site — to be launched during the event — will pursue setting a new Guinness record for the biggest coffee cup in the world, during an event scheduled for Oct. 9.

“PuertoRicoIsCoffee.com built a cup that will be filled with 2,750 gallons of coffee sponsored by Yaucono. It will serve more than 50,000 cups of coffee that will be sold at $1 on behalf of the United Way,” said Orlando Montañez, event co-producer and partner of CUBE Group Inc. “This event will help to reposition our coffee worldwide, as well as draw the attention of international media to our island.”

The two-day celebration of one of the island’s flagship agricultural crops includes unveiling the PuertoRicoIsCoffee.com site, designed to teach people about Puerto Rican coffee, and provide a distribution channel for the island’s special and commercial brands around the world.

“The site will include sections that go from the history of our coffee to a shop where people will be able to buy Puerto Rican coffee brands. It will be very user friendly. It will also include links, news and articles that will help promote our coffee industry,” said Pedro Fernández Jerez, another of the producers and partner of Cube Group Inc.

“Undoubtedly, PuertoRicoIsCoffee.com will open new doors to our coffee globally. Some 10 brands have already confirmed their distribution through PuertoRicoIsCoffee.com,” he said.

The Puerto Rico Coffee Expo will gather dozens of local brands of this precious grain, as well as representatives and suppliers of this important and emerging local industry.

“We had an extraordinary success last year. More than 20,000 people attended the event, more than 40 coffee brands displayed their products, more than 30,000 coffee cups were served, 20 new baristas were certified and more than $100,000 in direct sales were achieved,” said Paul González, the group’s third producer and another partner of CUBE Group Inc.

“This year, the event’s main objective will be to stimulate and strengthen the Puerto Rican coffee industry locally and internationally,” González noted.

Puerto Rico Coffee Expo Puerto Rico Coffee Expo will also include the participation of other products that usually complement a cup of coffee, such as oats, bread, juices, cookies, cheese, and sweeteners, among others.
