Four major international and U.S.-based organizations have selected Puerto Rico as a destination to celebrate their annual conventions in events that will generate more than 13,300 room nights in local hotels and will have an estimated economic impact of $11.6 million, Meet Puerto Rico President Milton Segarra said Monday.

Three of the organizations are medical associations and a fourth group is comprised of university administrators in the United States. Two of the groups will conduct their conventions at the Pedro Rosselló Convention Center in San Juan, while the other two will do so at properties in Fajardo and Isla Verde, Segarra said.

These groups add up to three others announced in early February, whose impact on the local economy was estimated at $23.4 million and more than 26,700 room nights over the next 18 months, he said.

“Meet Puerto Rico has begun the year confirming events and high-performance groups for Puerto Rico, despite the great challenges that the industry experienced during 2016,” said the executive.

“The sustained focus of our team, which has adhered to a defined work plan, and the hand-in-hand collaboration with our partners have allowed us to maximize all the resources and experience that Meet Puerto Rico has accumulated as a DMO and have been vital to attract business and opportunities to the island when they are so needed,” added Segarra.

The confirmation of these groups is the result of an aggressive destination promotion program focused on closing a significant number of businesses that are currently in the prospective stage with high possibility for Puerto Rico.

“The experience and professionalism of the Meet Puerto Rico sales team is one of the main reasons why these organizations chose to carry out their conventions in Puerto Rico. Our sales and service teams are fully committed to our goals and objectives and their performance has been key to achieving these results,” he concluded.
