P.R. gets $1M from U.S. Dept. of Labor for clean-up works

Puerto Rico has received $1 million from the U.S. Department of Labor’s National Emergency Grant program to continue clean-up and recovery efforts in the wake of the tough weather the island experienced in May.

The funds are the second installment of the $4 million the agency awarded the local Labor Department, with which it has generated hundreds of temporary jobs for dislocated workers.

“The floodwaters may have receded, but Puerto Rico is still cleaning up,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. “These funds will provide additional assistance to help clean up and repair the affected communities by creating temporary jobs.”

The federal agency approved the funds on July 22, about a month after the Federal Emergency Management Agency 10 towns — Arecibo, Barranquitas, Coamo, Corozal, Dorado, Naranjito, Orocovis, Utuado, Vega Alta and Vega Baja — eligible for emergency funding.

Additional funding up to the full amount approved will be made available as Puerto Rico demonstrates a continued need for assistance, the U.S. Department of Labor said in a statement released Thursday.
