The Puerto Rico Bankers Association and the New York Federal Reserve Bank recently announced the winners of the 2012 “Puerto Rico Financial Awareness Video Contest,” which drew participation from 122 students from 19 universities. The competitors submitted 19 videos aimed at encouraging financial skills and responsibility among our youth.

The winning video was “Misterios del Dólar,” (“Mysteries of the Dollar”) created by Marlene Medina-Ortiz, Christian Rodríguez-Jusino, and Gabriel Cruz-Vázquez from the Pontifical Catholic University in Ponce Campus. The video emphasizes the benefits of saving and provides tips about bank accounts, and how much a person should save from their income to achieve short, medium and long-term goals.

“This contest gives us the opportunity to provide young people with effective tools that at the same time are attractive and entertaining, to raise their awareness about the importance of the effective management of their personal finances,” said Arturo Carrión, executive vice president of the Bankers Association.

The “Puerto Rico Financial Awareness Video Contest” is one of the multiple educational efforts the banking industry carries out throughout the year, which included the launching of the organization’s Facebook fan page and Twitter account in June. Through these platforms, the nonprofit professional group provides tips on budget administration, expenses management, and safe use of credit and debit cards, among other topics.

“We are very pleased with the students’ support and participation in the fourth edition of the contest, and that they continue to help us in our mission to promote financial education among the youth in Puerto Rico and the United States,” said Kausar Hamdani, senior vice president of regional and community affairs for the New York Federal Reserve Bank.

The executive added that videos of all participants will be available to the public in both the NYFRB and Bankers Association’s websites.

The contest’s second place was awarded to Eva R. Concepción-Cardona and Jacobo Concepción-Cardona from the Inter American University, Arecibo Campus, for their video “Mi Nombre es Eva” (“My name is Eva”).  Third place winner was “Caperucita y el Lobo” (“Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf”) created by Catherine I. Díaz-Goytía, Génesis Ramos-Aponte, and Miguel Loubriel-Reyes from the Ana G. Méndez University System’s Turabo University.

Taking the first ever “People’s Choice” award was “Sin identidad no eres nadie” (“You are nobody without an identity”) created by Kelly Martínez, Diana Andrades, and José Ángel Rivera-Rosa, from the same campus.

Each first place winner will receive a $700 cash prize and round-trip tickets for a three–day, two-night trip to New York City. Second place winners will each receive a $700 scholarship, and third place winners will receive a $500 scholarship each.

Criteria for evaluating the videos submitted included: adequate contents, statistics presented correctly and accordingly with contents; key terms correctly presented and defined; connection with target; and its capacity to encourage young people to assume a responsible financial behavior. The message’s relevance to the audience was also a key factor taken into consideration.
