The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday it is making $5.6 million available in grants through the Rural Community Development Initiative to help rural businesses create jobs and spur economic development.

“This funding will help local and regional organizations as they assist small and emerging businesses,” USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said. “The Obama Administration recognizes small businesses as the engines of job creation and essential to strengthening our national economy.”

In 2012, the town of Camuy received a $97,280 grant to provide technical assistance and capacity building to a nonprofit organization to improve community and economic development, said José Otero-García, Rural Development state director for Puerto Rico.

The deadline for submitting grant applications is Nov. 12, and they must be submitted to the USDA Rural Development state office where the applicant’s headquarters are located.

Additional information can be obtained by visiting USDA’s website.
