Walgreens toy drive benefits 125 nonprofits

Walgreens collected 5,000 gifts for island children.

Under the slogan “Every child deserves a Christmas gift,” close to 5,000 children will be getting a present during this holiday season, collected by Walgreens in Puerto Rico. The kids who participate in programs run by 125 community groups have been receiving their toys during visits the retailer’s staff has conducted and that conclude on Friday’s Three Kings Day celebration.

“Since last December, a large number of caring people in the community, along with to Walgreens staff have made Christmas brighter for a large number of Puerto Rican children by donating a new toy at their nearest Walgreens,” said Nivia Santiago, vice president of marketing in charge of Walgreens operations in Puerto Rico.

Some 5,000 toys worth close to $40,000 were collected, she said.

“We identified about 125 entities that provide services to children throughout Puerto Rico and assigned one or more of them to our 110 Walgreens pharmacies for the toy drive that ends today,” she said, adding that Centros Sor Isolina Ferré, the Police Athletic League, Hogar Cuna San Cristóbal, Hogar Niños que quieren sonreír, the Children’s Hospital and several children’s and women’s battered shelters benefitted from the toy drive.
